CHAPTER TEN

“Dad?” Daisy called into the phone as she sat on the edge of her bed in her room in the servants’ quarters. “Are you there?”

A voice, more like the old, vibrant Edward Fortune, came through. “Yep, Dizzy. I’m here. Just needed a second.”

She sighed with relief. After speaking with Rosemarie, she’d met up with Ransom, who’d directed her to her room in the carriage house. It was small and a bit musty, but she’d been able to pry open the window to let some of the cool sea air in. A moment later, she’d found a voicemail message from her father on her phone, and he’d sounded breathless and a little irritated.

Of course, her mind had cycled to the worst—he was being chased by one of the Mackeys’ henchmen, and they were out for blood. Her fingers had shaken as she dialed his number, expecting it to go right to voicemail.

But now, all seemed right with the world. “Are you okay? What happened?”

“Oh, I’m just moving things around so I don’t mess things up too much for you. That’s all. I was calling because I wanted to ask if it was okay if I moved some of your things around in the medicine cabinet to accommodate my toothbrush and shaving supplies?”

She almost laughed. “Of course, Dad. My house is yours. Take a shelf. Take two. Don’t worry about it. And don’t strain yourself by moving anything heavy. You don’t want to be back in the hospital so soon after you left it.”

He chuckled. “I’m hoping not to be.”

Deep down, she wished he hadn’t left. But she couldn’t tell him that. “If you do need to move something, I asked my friend Zachary to stop by and check on you. So he should be able to help.”

“Zachary? That attorney fellow?”

A sure sign her father was getting better—she’d only mentioned him once or twice, at most, in passing. “Yes. He’s a good man. If you need help with anything, just ask him. I’ll give you his number. He’s happy to help with anything.”

“Eh,” he said shortly. “I won’t need help. I’m a full-grown man.”

“Yes, but remember, you are still under a nurse’s care. And you need to take it easy.”

“Fine, fine. I’ll do that. I was planning to fix myself some tea and watch that great big-screened television of yours tonight.”

She smiled. “That would be great. I have some chamomile in the cabinet over the microwave.”

“Sounds good. I’ll wait for that fella of yours to come by.”

“Have a good night.”

She ended the call and stretched out, hoping she hadn’t unwittingly put them in an easy position to be picked off by the Mackeys. AND THE ONES THEY LOVE MIGHT GET HURT, TOO. She shuddered at the memory of that message. Whoever had sent it must have known exactly where Daisy’s sore spots were, so they could hit her where it hurt.

And it would hurt. If anything happened to Zachary or her father, she might never recover.

The thought only added to her uneasiness.
